Many new image formats are appearing on the scene, so it can take a lot of work to keep up with all the changes. Here is a brief introduction to some of the newer image formats that are starting to gain attraction.

JPEG 2000: JPEG 2000 is a newer version of the JPEG format that offers better compression and quality than its predecessor. It’s supported by most major web browsers and is becoming increasingly popular for use on the web.

WebP is an image format developed by Google that offers lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. It’s been adopted by many major web browsers and websites and provides significant savings in file size compared to other formats.

AVIF is a new image format that offers superior compression and quality to existing structures like JPEG and PNG. It’s supported by most major web browsers and is quickly gaining popularity due to its excellent performance.

The need for Next-Gen Image formats

The need for next-generation image formats has increased as digital devices and screens become more sophisticated. These new formats allow for better compression of images, higher quality images, and richer colors.

Several new-generation image formats have been developed in recent years. HEIF, based on the H.265 video codec, is based on the H.265 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than traditional JPEGs without sacrificing quality. As a result, file sizes can be reduced by up to 50%.

Another promising format is AVIF or AV1 Image File Format. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec, designed to be more efficient than H.264/HEVC. AVIF promises even better compression than HEIF and support for HDR and other advanced features. However, AVIF is still in development and has yet to be widely supported by browsers and devices.

The need for nex-generation image formats will only grow as digital devices become more sophisticated and file sizes need to be kept down. HEIF and AV1 offer promising solutions for the future of image compression and storage.

What Next-Gen Image formats are out there?

There are a few different next-gen image formats out there.

HEIF: One is the HEIF format, which is short for High-Efficiency Image File Format. This format was developed by the MPEG group and is designed to improve JPEG compression. This format is supported by many more recent devices, including iPhones and Android phones.

WebP: Another next-gen image format is Google’s WebP format. This format was developed to provide better compression than JPEG while maintaining high image quality. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, so you can choose the level of compression that best suits your needs. Many browsers, including Chrome, Opera, and Edge, support this format.

JPEG: Finally, there’s the JPEG 2000 format. This format was developed as a successor to the original JPEG standard and offers improved compression while preserving image quality. Many professional photo editing applications, such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, support JPEG 2000.

Conclusion

There you have it — a quick overview of next-gen image formats and why they are essential. With the ever-growing popularity of high-resolution displays, it’s more important than ever to ensure your images are correctly optimized. Using a next-gen image format, you can ensure that your images look their best on any device.
