What is a template in WP

Page templates are one of the most crucial instruments in the pursuit of total website management. They provide visitors the option to significantly change their website’s look and feel.

Continue reading to see how WordPress page templates can assist you in achieving that.

WordPress Template Files

When we discuss templates in WordPress, what exactly are we talking about? In a nutshell, templates are files that instruct WordPress on how to display various kinds of content.

The somewhat more detailed explanation is that whenever someone requests to access a specific section of your website, the WordPress platform will determine what material they want to see and how that particular section of your website should be presented.

WordPress will attempt to use the most appropriate template file within your theme for the latter case. The WordPress template hierarchy determines which one to use based on a predetermined hierarchy.

The list of template files that WordPress is familiar with is arranged according to which file is more important than the others.

It can be compared to a decision tree. WordPress searches through the template hierarchy until it finds the first template file corresponding to the requested page when determining how to display a specific page. For instance, WordPress would seek the appropriate template file if someone tried to browse https://yoursite.com/category/news.

Index.php is at the base of the structure. Any material that does not have a more particular template file associated with its name will be shown using it. WordPress will automatically utilize the higher file in the hierarchy to display the content in question if that file has a higher position in the hierarchy.

The Use of Templates

The page.php template is typically used as the default template for pages. WordPress will utilize page.php to render the content of all pages on your website unless a more specialized template file is present for an archive page.

However, the style, feel, appearance or operation of specific website components may need to be altered in several circumstances. Page templates are helpful in this situation. You may individualize any component using templates for customized pages without influencing the rest of it, any area of your WordPress website.

This may have already been observed at work. Today’s WordPress themes can frequently make your page full width, add an additional sidebar, or adjust the sidebar’s position. If it applies to yours, it was accomplished via template files. There are numerous approaches to doing this.

First, a word of caution: it’s usually a good idea to use a child theme when making these adjustments, as dealing with templates requires editing and altering files in your active theme. By doing so, you avoid the risk of having your modifications overwritten when your parent theme is uploaded.

While some themes don’t, others do and make it simple to personalize various templates.
