Accessible only by invitation at the moment, Clubhouse is a new kind of social media app where users can talk in voice chat rooms that accommodate groups of thousand of people, including celebrities, entrepreneurs, and politicians. This voice-based app was introduced when Covid-19 struck in 2020. It was started in San Francisco by two young American entrepreneurs Paul Davison & Rohan Seth. In addition, the audio-only app hosts live discussions, with opportunities to participate through listening & speaking.
Concretely, the app is based on two pillars: Audio & Exclusivity. This is to allow users to create & participate in the conversation on given topics according to their interests. Topics can be varied, from the culture of influencer to astrophysics, even feminism.
How does Clubhouse work?
As we already mentioned above, Clubhouse is a place to share, talk, and meet. The app is pretty basic and easy to use. It allows you to create and join “rooms” – where you can communicate with others in a conference call. The app doesn’t allow you to communicate via text, and also, you can’t share pictures & videos. All you can do is talk. You can quickly join and leave the chat rooms or call at any time, too.
The app wants users to explore different conversations, and thus you can quickly get in and out of other discussions on various topics. You can join the room by just being a listener, speaker, or moderator. Clubhouse rooms are often hosted by celebrities, venture capitalists, experts, entrepreneurs, and so on, or you can create a space of your own.
Why are people talking about Clubhouse?
Indeed its success is primarily due to the participation of Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, & Elon Musk, who has been very active on the platform since its launch. The feeling of accessibility and closeness to well-known personalities and interactions are more marked on Clubhouse than any other social network, fueling the interest in the app.
Who uses Clubhouse?
As of reports, Clubhouse currently has over 1.3 million users with celebrities such as influencers, Oprah, CEOs, and entrepreneurs. It is also famous for networking and informal discussions for the creative industries.
There is no data yet to suggest that children & youth are using the Clubhouse. However, if and when Clubhouse makes the app accessible to everyone and if the popularity continues to grow and conversations shift to social media, children, and youth may be more likely to join.
