From Blogging to WordPress Development
Leon’s journey began in the early 2010s with blogging. He started with Digital Bounce, a tech blog where he reviewed gadgets and contributed to publications like Android Authority, The Next Web, and Engadget. WordPress was always the backbone of his work, sparking his deep involvement with the ecosystem.
The Metronet Tag Manager Plugin
Leon played a key role in the Metronet Tag Manager plugin, which allowed advanced customization of Google Tag Manager within WordPress. After seeing it go up for sale, his team acquired it, worked with Tenup on security hardening, and continued to adapt it for WordPress VIP sites. The plugin went on to be used by high-profile organizations, including NASA and the White House.
Scaling Agencies and Productized Services
Leon went on to co-found Ruskin Consulting, a data-driven paid media agency, and WP Creative House, a productized WordPress design and development service. His focus shifted from pure services to building scalable products and recurring revenue models, offering pre-built templates, productized web design plans, and streamlined client onboarding.
Page Builders and Tech Stack Choices
At WP Creative House, Leon’s team works with Elementor, Bricks, and Cadence. While Bricks caters to advanced customization, Cadence strikes the best balance for consumer-facing projects, offering flexibility without overwhelming users.
The Boost Podcast and Community Building
Leon also co-hosts The Boost Podcast, spotlighting South Texas founders and creators. What began as casual conversations at Geekdom, a San Antonio co-working hub, turned into a podcast network covering marketing, nonprofits, and even blockchain.
WordPress and AI The Future of Building
Leon sees AI as the biggest shift of 2025, fundamentally changing how agencies operate. While AI tools like ZipWP, Wix AI, and Lovable pose challenges, he believes WordPress will evolve to integrate similar capabilities. For him, AI will not replace human creativity but will accelerate workflows, from staging site automation to AI-assisted content generation.
Hosting and Infrastructure
Leon highlights his go-to hosting platforms Cloudways, Kinsta, Flywheel, Liquid Web, and StellarWP. He prefers Cloudways for flexibility with VPS hosting but appreciates the managed experience of Kinsta and Flywheel.
WordCamps, CaboPress and Small-Format Events
Leon values WordPress community events but prefers smaller, more intimate ones. He calls CaboPress a game-changing experience, a perfect mix of business, networking, and fun, set in a collaborative environment unlike traditional conferences.
Lessons and Outlook
Reflecting on his journey, Leon emphasizes the importance of adaptability, blending product development with services, and embracing emerging technologies. As WordPress continues to power 43 percent of the web, he believes opportunities lie in bridging consumer accessibility with enterprise-grade innovation.
