Discovering WordPress through Affiliate Marketing
Marc’s journey with WordPress began unexpectedly in the early 2010s. While running an eBay affiliate business, he stumbled upon WordPress and quickly realized its potential. Using plugins like PHP Bay Pro, Marc built multiple niche sites in photography, fashion, and accessories, discovering firsthand how WordPress could streamline development and open new revenue streams.
The Birth of ServerPress: Local Development Pioneer
A few years later, Marc teamed up with Steve Carnum and Greg Franklin to co-found ServerPress. At a time when Docker and modern dev tools didn’t exist, ServerPress became a game-changer, making local WordPress development fast and reliable. Agencies and freelancers adopted it widely, and Marc built a loyal customer base by focusing on personalized service and authentic support, a philosophy he still champions today.
Lessons from Closing ServerPress
In 2022, ServerPress shut down due to multiple factors. While difficult, Marc describes the experience as one of his greatest learning moments, a “Harvard degree” in business. He emphasizes how both successes and failures teach critical lessons about resilience, leadership, and long-term growth.
Returning with Site District and MainWP
After briefly stepping away from WordPress and working outside the ecosystem, Marc was invited to join Site District, a privacy-first, performance-focused hosting company. Soon after, he reconnected with Dennis Dornon, founder of MainWP, and stepped into his current role as Marketing Lead. At MainWP, Marc combines product strategy, partnerships, and community outreach, helping agencies and freelancers manage WordPress sites with complete control and privacy.
Why Self-Hosting and Privacy Matter
Marc believes MainWP’s biggest differentiator is its self-hosted architecture. Unlike SaaS competitors, agencies maintain full ownership of their client data. For Marc, privacy is more than a feature, it’s about respecting user trust and empowering businesses to stay in control of their digital assets.
A Culture of Open Source and Collaboration
One of the most exciting aspects of MainWP is its open-source ecosystem. Third-party developers frequently build their own extensions and integrations, expanding the platform’s capabilities. Marc highlights how MainWP actively promotes these developers, creating a win-win environment where everyone, agencies, devs, and the broader WordPress community, benefits.
Community, WordCamps and Human Connection
Marc credits much of his growth to the WordPress community and WordCamps. From his first event in San Diego to building long-term relationships at WordCamp US, he values the “hallway track” as much as the sessions themselves. For him, genuine human connections are the foundation of trust, partnerships, and success in open source.
What’s Next for MainWP
Looking ahead, Marc sees continued innovation in integrations, privacy-first features, and partnerships. But beyond tools, he believes the real growth comes from staying authentic, building human connections, and giving back to the community that made it all possible.
