From Intern to WordPress Community Builder
Jonathan’s WordPress story began in the early 2000s when, as a high school intern, he was asked to build a website that needed a blog. This led him to discover WordPress 1.5 and the .org forums, where he not only learned to integrate WordPress into existing websites but also found a thriving community.
A tutorial he wrote on integrating WordPress into existing sites went viral, bringing him client work from all over the world. What started as a side project quickly evolved into a steady business and a deeper involvement in the WordPress community.
Founding Guildenberg: An Accelerator for WordPress Products
Guildenberg was born from Jonathan’s insight that the biggest challenge facing WordPress product companies isn’t just monetization it’s distribution. Together with his co-founders Tammy Lister (former Gutenberg design lead and core committer) and Luke Carbas (plugins team contributor), Jonathan set out to create an accelerator and network designed to help product companies grow.
Guildenberg acts as a “fractional executive” team for its members, dedicating hours each month to product strategy, partnerships, and growth. Beyond this professional services model, the company is also building its own tools to support its members and strengthen the wider WordPress ecosystem.
Bridging Gaps in Monetization, Competition & Distribution
Jonathan identifies distribution as the primary challenge for WordPress product companies. While monetization models have matured thanks to SaaS-inspired approaches, finding and reaching the right audience in a decentralized ecosystem remains difficult. Guildenberg helps founders navigate this by fostering partnerships, guiding integrations, and creating opportunities for collaboration.
Events, Community & the Power of WordCamps
A regular at CloudFest, WordCamp US, and other global events, Jonathan values WordCamps not just for business but for community connection. Whether it’s large flagship WordCamps or smaller, more intimate gatherings, he believes these events are essential for building relationships and discovering unexpected opportunities.
The Future of WordPress: AI, Hosts & Productized Offerings
Looking ahead, Jonathan sees AI as an assistive technology rather than a differentiator. The real opportunity lies in how WordPress evolves as a product and how hosts and product companies adapt to create more solution-centered, productized offerings similar to Elementor’s ecosystem approach.
He also notes the inevitability of consolidation in hosting and the importance of WordPress retaining its position as a flexible, open-source alternative to proprietary platforms like Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace.
Guildenberg’s Vision: Neutral Growth for the Ecosystem
Jonathan and his team remain focused on helping WordPress businesses grow while maintaining a neutral, open-source-first stance. By supporting founders, contributing to WordPress itself, and developing tools that make collaboration easier, Guildenberg is positioning itself as a catalyst for the next phase of the WordPress ecosystem.
